The English-sounding name seems oddly out of place straddled as it is by Ebbw Vale just across the Ebbw river on one side, and Brynmawr just over the hill. Make no mistake this is a fiercely-proud, close-knit, Welsh community, but there are echoes to the name of the Duke of Beaufort who owned much of the land the community stands on.
Formerly part of the Parliamentary County of Brecon, it joined the Urban District of Ebbw Vale in 1878.
Yet another Blaenau Gwent town built on iron and then coal and then, of course, steel just a short journey away at the giant Ebbw Vale ‘works’.
One of the things which marks out Beaufort is its strong non-conformist outlook and tradition. At one stage there were thriving Baptist, Welsh Calvinistic Methodist, Welsh Wesleyan, English Presbyterian, English Wesleyan, English and Welsh Congregational, and English Primitive Methodist chapels all vying for the attention and the souls of the people of Beaufort.
