In many ways the staggering transformation which took place across Blaenau Gwent,or Aberystruth as it was then known, can best be seen in this small, close-knit community. Before iron and coal came there was a scattering of farms and little else. It was the only work. Until, that was, the discovery of iron and coal, just below the fields of those farms.
Nantyglo’s famous Lion Mill ironworks, with the industrial clashes it produced, are well-known, worldwide. Less-known, and less-documented, was the creation of the works at Blaina which, eventually, was to be swallowed up by the Nantyglo iron-producing giant. By 1879 the Blain works were dismantled leaving local people dependent on the neighbouring Iron Mill for their work and livelihood.
