If ever a community was built on and for coal it is Cwm, a couple of miles south of  Ebbw Vale. Two main pits kept the small village in work (on and off) from 1880 and for almost 110 years.

Its first pit was the Cwm and Mon colliery. By 1896 it was employing 124 men. By 1908 that had dropped to 105, and then by 1938 to just 58 men. But there was always the other colliery to turn to.  From 1889 the nearby Marine Colliery was being developed. At its peak it employed 1,540 men. But, by 1989 Marine – the last deep mine in the Ebbw Valleys – was closed.

The importance of  coal to this small community can best be see by looking at the roll-call of workers at ‘Marine’ in 1927.  Of the 51 men employed there then 37 of them walked the short distance to work from their terraced homes in this small community.
