Nantyglo

At the head of the Ebbw Fach river, just south of Brynmawr, and towering up to 1,500 feet in places, like its neighbour Cwmtillery, just down the valley, the community stood on iron seams which were, eventually, to mark it out, and shape it.

A full seven years before the Tredegar Ironworks was established, the sky above Nantyglo burned red. Opened in 1795 the Nantyglo ‘works’ lasted just one year. Disputes between management and workers took 15 years to resolve.  By 1825 there was work for 3,500 men, women, and children in the works, feeder pits, trams and other linked jobs. By 1844 the Lion Mill was established and with it came world-wide recognition for Nantyglo and its products.

What was less well known were the life-crushing conditions many had to work in. This bred riots, the imposition of troops, the up-swelling of organised trades unions and a spirit of protest and defiance. The sort of independent-minded politics which has marked out these valleys can be traced directly to the fact that iron had been discovered on the hillsides of Nantyglo.
