CAMPAIGN? OR COMPLAIN? ……….. IT’S OUR CHOICE!.
I became an MP for a number of reasons. The first was (and remains) my deep loathing for injustice. The second was that despite all of the selfishnesses and barriers and vested interests, it is always better to do what small thing you can to bring about positive change. Put simply – it is better for me, and for you, to be part of the cure rather than part of the rot (however small the changes are that we actually end up making). The third reason was the belief that, in the end, we are all here to serve.
As this website develops it is my hope and intention that it will serve you in many ways.
By keeping you in touch, by encouraging debate, and by spreading some humour and something of the human side of what life is like not only in these friendly three valleys of ours but also (even) in some of the unexpected recesses of Parliament.
One of the most important ways I can help to do that is by campaigning on issues I feel passionately about, and I know many of you do too.
Among the campaigns I have already played a prominent part in is revealing the scourge and shame of child poverty – and put forward the arguments about why we simply must find a way to end it. I have fought for press freedom and am fighting (literally) for the very survival of many of our newspapers (and television). An uninformed society is just one step away from a society where an un-controllable, political, elite, may end up making decisions we then end up knowing nothing about.
I have campaigned for fair treatment for the fine fighting men of the Gurkhas; have exposed the hidden and ticking time-bomb of prescription drugs which are (literally) leaving millions in this country seriously addicted; I have called for (and costed) an environmentally-sound transport system which would (literally) link every one of our people to all of the vital services and work they need.
And I have also exposed the shocking fact that our teenagers and young people are being targetted by unscrupulous and unspeakable loan-sharks.
